Reciprocal Exchange

Writer: Brothers keeperBrothers keeper
Last year Pastor Asante had the wonderful opportunity to partake in the Washington Mandala Fellowship through the United States Embassy. Unfortunately his cohort took place during 2021 while traveling was suspended, and was not able to spend the months in the US partaking in leadership training as is the norm for the program. He did distance learning and participated in a reciprocal exchange with Dr. Bobbie Legg from Arizona State University.
As a part of their exchange, she arrived in Malawi at the beginning of November for three weeks of capacity building training in mental health and trauma treatment for organizations working with children who have survived abuse, neglect and/or human trafficking and are living without adult care and lack permanent housing. She spent the mornings training Brothers in Arm's 9 staff members, and the afternoons with the students.
Her training has greatly benefitted our organization and the way we will do one on ones from now on. Not only have we as staff been better trained to deal with trauma, our students have experienced such growth in healing through the weeks she was here. Beyond spending time counselling them through their trauma, Dr. Bobbie and her husband Dr. Eric took the boys to the lake and to the mountains.
We are grateful to the U.S. Embassy and the Mandela Washington Fellowship for this opportunity for growth within our organisation to better serve youth living without adult care and lacking permanent housing.
