There has been a rise in discussion amongst the communities of Blantyre over the disturbance that is arising at street corners and roundabouts where many youth gather to beg. Some of these youth have become more aggressive when not given hand outs.
In response to the concern, yesterday, City Council met with Faith leaders of the predominant religions practiced here to discuss what can be done as a community.
Giving alms to the poor is a cornerstone to many religions. By giving to those begging on the street, most of the time we are not helping them but enabling them to continue begging, and encouraging others to join.
Pastor Asante gave a presentation at this meeting explaining in greater depth the consequences of giving handouts at street corners, and what we as a community can do instead. There are 5-6 locally run organisations that are working to mentor, empower and educate former street kids.
The meeting was successful and we hope that instead of giving to those on the street that the people of Blantyre would give to these organisations to invest in the future of our youth!
